What is the kimchi premium?

The kimchi premium is the gap between cryptocurrency prices on South Korean exchanges (Upbit, Bithumb) and global exchanges such as Binance. Korean capital controls and strict KYC rules make it hard for arbitrageurs to move funds across borders, so strong local retail demand can push Korean prices well above global levels. When Korean prices fall below global prices, traders call it a reverse premium (or kimchi discount).

The premium is widely watched as a Korean retail sentiment indicator. A rising premium often means aggressive Korean retail buying, while a persistent discount signals weak local demand. For the full background, read What Is the Kimchi Premium?

What is the Tether (USDT) premium?

The Tether premium shows how far the KRW price of USDT on Upbit sits above the actual USD/KRW exchange rate. Since USDT is pegged to the dollar, it should normally trade very close to the exchange rate.

When demand for dollar stablecoins surges in Korea, USDT trades above the rate — so a rising Tether premium is widely read as money flowing into the Korean crypto market. Right now it stands at +1.53%.

How it's calculated

Premium (%) = (Korean price in KRW ÷ (global USDT price × USD/KRW rate) − 1) × 100

For example, Bitcoin is ₩107,373,000 on Upbit, while the Binance price converts to ₩105,688,899 at the current rate. Dividing the two gives a premium of +1.59%.

This page uses live Upbit KRW prices, Binance prices and the current USD/KRW rate — the same data behind our dashboard, which tracks 400+ coins across six exchanges.

FAQ

What counts as a high kimchi premium?

In quiet markets the Bitcoin premium usually moves between 0% and 3%. Above 5% is generally read as strong Korean buying, and above 10% as overheating. It reached roughly 50% in January 2018 and around 20% in April 2021.

Can foreigners arbitrage the kimchi premium?

Practically no. Korean exchanges require a Korean bank account and residency-based KYC, and Korea limits cross-border transfers. That friction is exactly why the premium persists.
